Title: Introduction to SaeboFlexTM and Saeboflex Arm Training Programme.
Dates: 14th and 15th September 2007 (08:45 - 17:30 both days)
Details: 2-day .SaeboFlex clinician training course. To identify those appropriate for the SaeboFlexTM. Used initially with head injury and stroke, it has now more widely used with Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury and Cerebral Palsy.

It is well known in the neurological rehabilitation community that the treatment of hemi-paretic patients that exhibit some shoulder and elbow movement but no hand function is incredibly difficult. Since the impaired hand cannot effectively be incorporated into treatment, clinicians must resort to more palliative therapeutic techniques such as Passive Range of Movement, tone reduction strategies, and bilateral arm exercises.

This programme is designed to provide physiotherapists with instruction in a new treatment based orthosis called the SaeboFlexTM that will allow many patients with no hand function to immediately begin using their hand in therapy, something that would otherwise be impossible. The SaeboFlexTM is most appropriate for patients who do not qualify for treatments such as constraint-induced movement therapy secondary to insufficient wrist and finger extension. The SaeboFlexTM dynamic orthosis is unique in that it actually assists with thumb and finger extension so grasp and release tasks can be accomplished and practiced.

This course will review current research findings that relate to neurological treatment of the hemi-paretic limb and will explain how the SaeboFlexTM, in-conjunction with the Saebo Arm Training protocol, can benefit patients suffering from upper extremity neuro- motor impairments.

In addition, practitioners will learn how to correctly fit and adjust the SaeboFlexTM to accommodate the variety of patient presentations often encountered in the clinical setting. Practitioners will have the opportunity to hone their fitting skills and learn to develop patient specific treatment plans incorporating the SaeboFlexTM while working with volunteer stroke survivors.
